18 WORKS
Heads, 1988–1989, is a series of nineteen small sculptural heads — fourteen now preserved — averaging 50 cm in height. Each piece is assembled from a mix of plaster, metal, wood, textile, sandpaper, mirrors, photographs and other materials, with some incorporating mechanical and kinetic elements.
Several pieces remain in private collections. The series was shown in 1989 at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and the same year at Smile, Joke and Grin at the Palace of Culture, Prague.
"I tried getting into the university three times after I finished electronics high school in 1986. The first two times they told me I had no talent. After my exams I decided to enter the industrial design program because this was still during the Bolshevik period and if I wanted to make sculptures, I didn’t want to be under the pressure of the communists’ sculpting requirements, which were dominant at that time in the university. I realized that if I studied industrial design there was no way anyone would tell me, “For the next half year you will design a vacuum cleaner in a Stalinist way.” Art Interview, Issue 3, 2005
